HEALTHCARE

As an EU citizen, you have the same rights to healthcare as you have in your home country. However, you need to have a European Health Insurance Card to prove that you’re paying health insurance in a different country. If you don’t have this card, you might be required to pay for your treatment. If you’re non-EU citizen, then you need the usual travel insurance you get.

There are 2 medical centers in Bansko for the usual tourist care and a hospital in Razlog where you would head if you have an emergency and treatment by a specialist. You will get treatment no matter if you have proof of insurance with you at the moment. You will be handed a bill that you need to pay on the spot and declare with your insurance. But it won’t be high even if you don’t have insurance, so don’t delay treatment if you need it. Most common fixes are < 100 lev.

If injured on the slope/mountain

Call the Mountain Rescue Team (+359 88 7100241) and explain exactly where you are. You can also download the Bulgarian Red Cross / Mountain Rescue app and send them your location.
